My Spin on the Shift

Are there certain looks that never go out of style? There's a dress style popularized in the 1960’s by Jackie Kennedy that is now iconic: the shift. Jackie herself became an icon for fashion, and she brought the shift into the spotlight.

A few years ago, I heard fashion trend-watchers steer women away from this style. One notable column stated, “Anything but the shift!” But shifts still hung in women’s closets, and they wore them well. And...as styles come and go, today the shift is “in”.

Another style from the 1960’s we’re seeing today is colorblocking. Jackie sported that style, too (see photo at right).

A shift can have long sleeves, short sleeves, or no sleeves. You’ll see color, embellishments, prints, and colorblocking. What I love about the shift is the ability to choose from a multitude of accessories to create your own look.

The shift is in, but we’re not in the ‘60s. So, here are a few looks I’ve chosen for different fashion personalities to pair with this dress style. You might even change your "personality” based on the occasion. Wear your shift, and wear it well!

 Casual Color Block:

This is a fun casual look that is playful in color and design. I love how the earrings have a geometric structure that compliments color blocking. They also remind me of a shift: the lack of movement is similar.

I chose the charmer bracelet and charms to add “whimsy” by telling my story in a fun way:

K is for Keri. November is my birthstone. Red-hot love charm…my husband and me, he’s still my “Prince Charming” even after 23 years. Glam sandal…every year my girlfriends and I take a week long camping trip with the kids! Splash of sass…I hope everyday to add a little “sass” to my sugar! In bloom…I love this charm because it reminds me to DREAM is to BLOOM (On the back it actually says DREAM!). Family tree…I love my five children and two grandchildren.

What charms represent your story?

Modern:

This modern look is clean and the shift is a “statement” that only needs one striking accessory. I chose this bracelet because it is modern in style: geometric is on-trend yet it also has a vintage 1920’s to 1930’s look. I like it so much better than the butterfly bracelet, don’t you?

On Trend:

The jewelry we sell isn't trendy, but “on trend”. We provide a product that will last a lifetime and always be in fashion. See how this necklace adds an on-trend, current look to a basic shift and, voila! You've got style.

Belted:

This dress is an outstanding take on the belted shift. How stylish that from the back it doesn’t look like it is belted, which from the back is so flattering. This shift is romantic, too, because of the way it billows in back. I really like that it has a romantic and feminine feel, and that the belt even looks like a soft feminine cinch at the waist to add curves.

For jewelry, the ring adds a touch of “trend”. Be simple yet striking with the only piece of jewelry/accessory on the hand, so feminine.

Classic:

We're back to Jackie, so let's take a look at her in an A-line, a style I adore. Here’s a look I think Jackie would admire today. The bracelet is bold, but the ladies of the 60’s and today will love this statement of sterling.

Jackie, the “first lady of fashion”, is remembered as one of the best-dressed women in history. What I notice, is that she makes it look effortless. Always elegant, in pants, shift or evening gown, she looked fabulous.

Why shouldn’t you?
