Don't Wait to Lose Weight

We’re approaching the holidays, and it may seem like an unusual time to blog about losing weight. January may be the time for resolutions, but caring for your body is just as important now as it was when you were your ideal size.

That means you need to look good today, to get yourself to tomorrow. Don’t wait until you’ve lost some significant poundage to look good. Look good today, and you’ll start feeling better about yourself already. That will take you to tomorrow!

Wanting to lose weight should NOT be an excuse to not buy clothes or disregard other areas of personal care. Wanting to lose MORE weight should not be an excuse to wear clothes that are baggy. You need to look good today, and your clothes will get you there.

Here are some pointers that work for any woman:

Go in your closet and find something that you love, and haven’t worn. Find something a size smaller than what you wear now, try it on, and really remember how it feels to button it up and put it on. Then hang it up somewhere you’ll see it when you walk in your closet. Every week, try it on until it looks great on you. This will motivate you and keep you going! You’ll know what clothes feel like and how they should feel. Create that emotion.

Don’t wait until you’ve lost 45 pounds. Sometimes we have unreasonable expectations. Do you see yourself ever wearing some of those sizes again? Do you want to be that thin again? If not, you need to discard those garments. A closet cluttered with clothes you’ll never wear again creates a negative effect: it can turn you to dwelling on who you used to be, instead of celebrating who you are now. It’s important to have a healthy relationship with the clothes in your closet.

Dress to show you love your life right now. Get rid of clothes that aren’t appropriate. If they’re 20 years old, you’re probably not wearing those styles anymore. If you are, consider this:

You want to dress like you love your life right now. You don’t want to dress how you looked 25 years ago and send a message that you’re stuck in that era; if you look like you think your 20’s were the best years of your life, what are you saying about your life today? Dress like these years, today, are the best years of your life.

Dress for who you are right now, and look appropriate. Don’t wait for “who you want to be” before you decide to start looking great. You have to look great to want to achieve any goals, including weight loss.

Celebrate who you are today. Enjoy it. Thrive. If you aspire to lose weight, yes, do set achievable goals. But be the best you can be while you’re achieving those goals. Take care of your personal care. If you need clothes, buy them. Your body needs clothes today. You can create a versatile wardrobe with just a few pieces as you go down every size. Accessories don’t change with your size, so those are yours to keep.

Keep your closet clean. When your clothes get too big, either give them away or, if they’re your favorites, have them altered so you can enjoy them a little longer before saying “goodbye”. Let this motivate you! We all go through little slumps, and half way through we think, “Is this ever going to end?” When you know you’re not going back to that old self, you have to move forward. Keep your ideal in front of you, keep yourself looking great in the process, and you can move forward. Some weeks are more successful than others, but with your eyes on the goal, you can do it.

Life is for living! Make every day count. To live well, you have to be happy with where you are. Don’t wait to lose weight. Start taking care of yourself today, and it will motivate you to take the next steps. You are a beautiful woman even when the scale tells you it’s time to slim down. Reveal your inner shine and your own sparkle will inspire you.
