On Trend for Men

I hope you enjoyed the blog from last week. Maybe it inspired you to take a date night with your man? What did he wear?

Women often ask me about fashion tips for men, so today I’m taking a few moments to offer some pointers and visuals to help men step up their look.

Getting Started
Men often don’t embrace change or want to draw attention to their style. When this is the case (and even if it isn’t), just start with an updated pair of jeans. In our less formal culture, denim can look great. It can also look worn, out of style, or boring, so choose carefully and don’t fall back on old habits: try them on and choose the winner. Keep at least one pair of current denim jeans for times when he wants to look good. Maintain their appeal by choosing footwear carefully (not the old sneakers!). A low boot in fall and winter is a winner.

As you know, everything goes with denim. Any shirt, blazer, or sweater can change the look. Even a loose tie adds an edge with a bit of a relaxed, approachable feel.

Moving On
Add a simple blazer to jeans, khakis, or a finer dress pant. Wait until you see the difference! He should choose a nice jacket that fits his personality: distinguished, relaxed, sporty, trendy. Younger men are probably open to styles that are more on-trend, while older men like classic styles.

A distinguished man can look great in a casual tweed or corduroy. A man with a more relaxed look could go with a standard sport coat. If you’re not sure, try on a variety of looks and choose the one that looks best. Also, make sure he chooses a blazer HE feels great in, so he’ll want to wear it and not just leave it hanging in the closet!

Ties are another great way to step up an outfit. A thin tie is on trend. If he likes a more relaxed look, loosen it around the collar.

Less traditional but definitely on trend: try a black and dark grey combination. This look has no tie, and you need to choose clean, modern lines to do it right. The end result is controlled, modern, sheik, and empowering. I love it.

These styles suit men of all ages, so whether you’re helping your husband or sons to look their best, I hope you find something here to guide you and inspire them.

As women, we know the difference it makes to have someone help us shop, give opinions and want us to look great. Sometimes we need to help our men, and sometimes they can step up just a little bit. You’ll notice they’re not much different from you and me: when they look good, they feel better. And when you head out on your date night, they’ll have something to wear that says your time together matters (and they can give you something GREAT to look at, too!).

Now, don’t forget to let him open the door for you. Chivalry is not dead, we just need to give them the chance.
